Higher Power's Care

I needed to make the decision to allow my Higher Power to take care of me.

Paths to Recovery, p. 105

Taking a daily inventory asks me to look honestly at my behavior. That can be difficult when I feel hurt or certain I am right. I can explain every sharp word by pointing to what someone else did first. Even when I recognize my part, admitting it may feel like letting the other person off the hook.

I need my Higher Power’s help to practice Step Ten. That help goes beyond recognizing a wrong. I need willingness to make amends and to face the character defects behind my actions—the pride, fear, or resentment that I cannot simply wish away.

Allowing my Higher Power to care for me includes accepting help to change. If resentment has led me to speak unkindly, I can acknowledge the hurt I caused without defending it. I can ask for that resentment to be removed and for help speaking honestly without trying to wound. My amend begins with admitting the harm and continues in how I treat that person.

Practice

In today’s inventory, I will look for an action that needs repair and the character defect behind it. I will ask my Higher Power to help remove that defect, take one step toward making amends, and practice a different response.

Today’s Reminder

I need a Power greater than myself to get past myself.
