Feeling Free

Taking the Fifth Step makes me feel free.

Paths to Recovery, p. 61

This morning is the day after my Step Five. I woke up feeling different – lighter somehow. Not that all my problems are solved or my character defects are gone but something has shifted. The weight I was carrying has lifted. I can breathe more easily.

Taking the Fifth Step makes me feel free. Free – that's exactly the word. Free from the secrets I was keeping. Free from the isolation I was maintaining. Free from the shame that was crushing me. Free from pretending I had it all together when I was falling apart inside.

The freedom came from being completely known and still accepted. I shared everything from my inventory – held nothing back said it all out loud. And the person listening didn't run away or judge me or confirm my worst fears about myself. They just witnessed me lovingly. And that witness set me free.

This is the freedom the program promises – not freedom from problems but freedom from the secrets and shame and isolation that make problems unbearable. Step Five delivered that freedom.

Practice

After completing Step Five, I can notice this feeling of freedom. Write it down. Remember it. This is what honesty and connection create – freedom from the weight of secrets. I can return to this feeling when I'm tempted to start keeping things to myself again.
