Our Proper Relationship

Step One reminds us of our proper relationship with others – we are powerless over them.

Paths to Recovery, p. 9

Step One teaches me an essential truth about relationships: their foundation is mutual powerlessness. I am powerless over others, and they are powerless over me. This isn't weakness; it's a definition of appropriate boundaries. When I try to exert power over someone else's choices, I warp the relationship into something it was never meant to be.

I once believed that love meant influence, that caring required changing another's behavior. Yet, healthy relationships aren't built on one person controlling another. They thrive on mutual respect for autonomy, even when choices are not understood or agreed upon.

Accepting my powerlessness acknowledges another's full humanity—their right to make choices, live consequences, and walk their own path. This can initially feel like abandonment, until I recognize it as respect. The proper relationship isn't about managing or fixing; it's about remaining fully myself while allowing others to be fully themselves. This creates genuine connection, not the false intimacy of enmeshment. Powerlessness isn't the problem; trying to overcome it is.

Practice

Today, I will identify one situation where I'm trying to manage someone else's choices and simply step back, letting them be fully themselves.
