The Necessity of Good Leadership
Good personal leadership at all service levels is a necessity.
When I first got into service, I confused humility with hiding. I thought good Al-Anon leadership meant being quiet, passive, and refusing to take charge. Concept Nine corrected that error. It states clearly that good personal leadership at all service levels is a necessity. True humility isn't about hiding my abilities; it's about using them responsibly in the service of the fellowship, without ego.
This concept costs me the comfort of remaining anonymous and blending in, which is a safety mechanism I developed long ago. But the spiritual payoff is the satisfaction of knowing I am contributing my God-given talents. Good leadership is about vision and direction, not dominance. It requires me to speak up when I see a need and step forward when no one else will, knowing that my authority comes from the group and my strength comes from God.
If I notice a need in my meeting or service structure today that no one is addressing, I will not complain about it. I will offer one concrete suggestion for improvement and then ask, 'How can I help?'
