Daily Health Maintenance

Health Step 10

Continuing to take personal inventory keeps our slates clean and, maintains our spiritual, emotional and physical health to better deal with the rough times that occur in everyday life.

Paths to Recovery, p. 104

The quote emphasizes that continuing to take personal inventory maintains our spiritual, emotional, and physical health. I used to separate these things, believing I could be spiritually fine while neglecting my body, or emotionally stable while spiritually bankrupt. Step Ten reminds me they are interconnected.

When I hold onto a resentment (spiritual neglect), it gives me a headache (physical pain) and makes me irritable (emotional imbalance). Taking inventory and cleaning the slate every day acts as preventative medicine across all three levels. I become healthier because I stop poisoning myself with unacknowledged guilt and unmade amends. My daily check-in is the most comprehensive wellness plan I have ever created.

I will check my three health components today: Spiritual (Did I pray?), Emotional (Am I holding a resentment?), Physical (Did I move and hydrate?). If one is out of balance, I will use Step Ten to correct it immediately.
