Daily Serenity, Continued Growth

To maintain our serenity and continue to grow, we continue to inventory ourselves and make amends to others.

Paths to Recovery, p. 102

I used to believe 'serenity' was a destination—a state I would reach after working all the Steps. Step Ten taught me that serenity is a daily renewable resource, and it requires action. The twin actions of continuing to inventory ourselves and making small amends are the keys to unlocking it each morning. I’m not digging up a trauma every day; I’m gently noticing if I was impatient, fearful, or controlling in the last 24 hours.

If I catch a small error, I can make a small amend immediately—a quick apology to my loved one, a correction in my attitude. This constant correction prevents the small slips from turning into major backslides. Step Ten turns grand spiritual theory into simple, practical daily life. It proves that continued growth is simply the sum of many small, honest adjustments.

When I feel a surge of irritation or anxiety today, I will stop and ask: 'What have I done or failed to do in the last hour that needs a small, immediate amend?' I will then follow through with the correction.

Today’s Reminder

Serenity is not a passive gift; it is the daily harvest of consistent, gentle inventory.
