A Clear Conscience

If we ask for the courage and willingness to do our part, we may find that we can drift off to sleep and start the next day with a clear conscience.

Paths to Recovery, p. 103

My old life was full of restless, sleepless nights, replaying conversations and fearing the next day's consequences. That chronic guilt was the spiritual debt I paid for avoiding Step Nine. Step Ten provides a beautiful contrast: the opportunity to drift off to sleep with a clear conscience.

This clarity is the result of honesty and willingness. It means I've done my small, daily spiritual work: I've examined the day, admitted my wrongs, and done any immediate, small amends necessary. I have asked for the courage and willingness to keep my slate clean. By entrusting my day, my defects, and my effort to my Higher Power, I trade anxious rumination for restful release. A clear conscience is the program's daily promise of grace.

Tonight, before getting into bed, I will write down three things I am grateful I did and one thing I need to turn over to my Higher Power. I will then mentally close the day before closing my eyes.

Today’s Reminder

A clear conscience is the peace I earn when I complete my spiritual work before the day is done.

Carry this peace in your pocket.
