Understanding Made It Easy
Once I understood Him, the decision to turn my will and my life over to Him was easy.
Once I understood Him the decision to turn my will and my life over to Him was easy. This surprises people who are struggling with Step Three. How could surrender ever be easy? But it makes perfect sense. The resistance to Step Three isn't about the Step itself but about who we think we're surrendering to.
When I believed I was turning my life over to a harsh judge the decision was impossible. Why would I trust someone who was looking for reasons to punish me? When I thought I was surrendering to a demanding perfectionist I held back. I couldn't meet those standards so why try? When my concept of God was cold and distant surrender felt like abandonment.
But once my understanding changed everything shifted. When I experienced my Higher Power as loving the decision to trust became natural. When I discovered a God of compassion rather than judgment surrender felt safe. When I found a Power that wanted my wellbeing more than my perfection letting go made sense.
The work of Step Three isn't in the decision itself but in the understanding that makes the decision possible. I needed to know who I was turning my life over to. Once I understood a Higher Power I could actually trust the rest followed easily.
Today I can work on deepening my understanding of the Higher Power I'm learning to trust.
