The Privilege of Choice

He gives me the privilege of making my own decisions.

Paths to Recovery, p. 32

One of the most beautiful aspects of my Higher Power is this: He gives me the privilege of making my own decisions. I spent so long afraid that turning my will over meant becoming a puppet losing all agency becoming someone who just waited passively for instructions. But the opposite happened.

My Higher Power doesn't override my will – He informs it. He doesn't make my decisions for me – He helps me make them more wisely. He doesn't take away my choices – He helps me see options I couldn't see before. The relationship enhances my autonomy rather than eliminating it.

This is so different from how I related to the alcoholic. I wanted to make their decisions for them believing I knew better than they did what they needed. I tried to override their will convinced that my way was the right way. But my Higher Power doesn't treat me that way. He respects my agency even when I use it poorly.

Learning to trust a Power that trusts me has changed how I relate to everyone. If God respects my right to make my own decisions even when they're mistakes then who am I to deny others that same privilege? The respect I receive I can now extend to others.

Today I can honor the privilege of making my own decisions while seeking guidance.
