Ready and Knowing

Relationship Step 6

What is important is that we are ready and we know our God.

Paths to Recovery, p. 66

I've been trying to understand what makes me ready for Step Six. Is it a certain level of willingness? A particular degree of desperation? A magic moment when everything clicks? I keep waiting for some clear sign that I'm ready enough to proceed.

What is important is that we are ready and we know our God. Two things – readiness and knowing God. Not perfect readiness or complete understanding of God but some readiness and some knowing. I don't have to wait until I'm entirely ready for all my defects or until I understand God completely. I just need to be ready for this one defect right now and to know enough about my Higher Power to trust the process.

Knowing my God doesn't mean having all the answers about who or what God is. It means having enough relationship enough experience enough trust to take this next step. I know God through my experience in the program. Through answered prayers. Through the way Step Five went. Through moments of grace I couldn't manufacture.

I'm ready for some defects. I know my God enough to trust. That's all Step Six requires right now.

I don't have to wait for perfect readiness or complete understanding of God. I can ask myself: Am I ready for this one defect? Do I know my Higher Power well enough to trust with this? Some readiness and some knowing are enough to begin.

Today’s Reminder

I need some readiness and some knowing not perfection.
